Have you had your fill of tourist traps, water parks, and malls with the kids? Drop on in to the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, located just 30 miles south of Price, Utah. A trip to the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry leaves you and your whole family with lasting memories.
While there are many theories, we don’t know what caused so many fossils to be deposited in one spot more than 147 million years ago. More than 12,000 individual bones, and one fossilized dinosaur egg, have already been recovered from this productive site. It’s estimated that at least 70 different animals are represented among these fossils. Palentologists haven’t even come close to reassembling all these bones, but there are complete Allosaur and a there is a partial Stegosaur skeleton.
Start your visit to Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in the new Visitor’s Center, which has many new exhibits and a wealth of information. Then, move on to the quarry tour. The quarry tour takes you on a fascinating trip through a real, working paleontological site.
Giant boulders are scattered everywhere throughout the park, so you have plenty of shade when you break open your family picnic. It’s a one-of-a-kind atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. The Rock Walk Nature Trail winds past so many sights you’ll have a hard time keeping track of the kids. Don’t forget to read the signs along the way, to learn about the spectacular history that’s been unearthed already, and all the history still waiting in the ground.
The deposit is also the largest collection of a large meat-eating dinosaur (allosaurus fragilis) ever found.
The trip to the site isn’t all on paved roads, you will be going on gravel and dirt with miles of sage-covered uplands, pinyon pine and uniper covered hillsides. So be prepared to travel for some distance on “country roads” which should add to your adventure. Start your visit at the Visitor Center which was reopened in March of 2007 after a huge renovation. This visitor center is the first one the BLM ever had. Ninety percent of the two dozen exhibits contained within are new, so even if you’ve been here before, this 147 million year old bone bed holds something new for you. Most visitors spend 20-40 minutes here before heading down the ADA-compliant 200 yard long sidewalk to the quarry buildings.
